For years, I've thrown a scarf or kitchen towel or blanket--whatever's handy--over the TV when I wanted to simply listen, but not have a "screen" on for my kids to get glued to. My teen son will go catatonic in front of anything--and I do mean ANYTHING. I like what you said here: "you have to get up and take it off before watching TV, which means you also have to consciously think about whether or not to watch." Right on, sista. I didn't know anybody else did this; I thought I was weird. :) I actually saw a pattern on Martha Stewart's website for a 'TV Cozy'. She just has a way of presenting things in such an un-fun way. I liked your way better. :)

[...] I guess instead of moving to the East Coast, I will carve pumpkins and eat a lot of roasted vegetables. And I will get rid of TV–I’m tired of it and we can use the extra $50 a month. And I will read books. Currently: Lady Chatterly’s Lover by DH Lawrence and Varieties of Disturbance by Lydia Davis. I am enjoying both, especially Davis’s book. I knew short stories could be like this, but it’s nice to be reminded. [...]

In my house, there's a fringed decorative scarf over the telly. It's inexpensive, looks nice, doesn't require sewing, and keeps that gray screen from looking at me all the time.

Marcia and Leona, yes! Good plans. I will make him food and then make up a technical sounding name. It will be like a modern episode of I Love Lucy.

Instead of calling it a "cozy" you should start calling it something that sounds tough and/or technological. "This isn't a TV cozy. It's a bitch-ass cracker." OR "This isn't a TV cozy. It's a TVM Blip blip 2.0"

OK, so I am better at being tough.

You should sketch it, using one of your vintacge fabrics as inspiration. Then, present it to Kyle after a delicious dinner and tell him that it's art.
